Marrakech Mystery

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

i have just come back from holiday from one of the most amazing places i have ever been to. To be frank, if you are thinking of going to Marrakech and staying in the Medina - nothing can prepare you for the culture shock - unless of course you have been before!

Marrakech is everything it lives up to be and more. bustling markets, mysterious snake charmers, tasty tajines and of course the famous and rather scary main square. We stayed in Riad Tizwa in the heart of the Medina - a ten minute walk to the sqaure. It was like an oasis of calm compared to the noise and crazyness of the outside world.

nothing has a set price so you barter for everything you buy - this can become rather tedious rather quickly, so try find a place to drink a couple of beers before doing so. also, a word of warning, most things are made in China - so you are probably not getting authenticity - unless you are buying a leather bag. you can tell the leather is from Morrocco because the tanneries are nearby and the leather has a strange smell to it - i dont think they treat it properly.

Beware of what you eat and whether its clean - I had a bit of stomach trouble for a couple of days but i tried hard not to let this ruin my stay.

i would reccommend Marrakech to those who want to explore and see somewhere different from the norm. Definately not a relaxing holiday, but that is what makes it unique.
