My Job

Girl | General, Jobs | Friday, 04 April 2008

Well, I’m off sick today, I have a cold. Everyone in my department has had it already and now me too! oh well. Thought I would talk a bit about my exciting job while i’m on here as i have nothing else to write about.

Earlier on I typed in buyers associate into google and there isnt many website’s which tell you about the job. So I thought I would talk about my role in case anyone is interested to go into buying as a career. I worked in fashion buying for four weeks and decided it wasn’t for me. It’s a bit too fast paced and you don’t get to spend time with the product because the clothes are always in and out and thats it. Also, you will find that with fashion, the designers have a big input into what you should be buying. Therefore, if your quite creative, it’s a bit frustrating.

I have moved into homeware buying and I have started off as a buyers associate. i have had quite a lot of retail experience coming from a merchandising background so I’m finding it quite easy to make the transition. I am really enjoying being a buying associate so far and each day is different. In short, no day is the same as the last. But the base of the role is that the suppliers will send samples in to you. You decide whether you like the sample and what you want changed. Then you will have a meeting with the supplier to discuss changes, then a red/silver/green (whatever you want to call it) will be sent with all the changes made. This is a pre production sample. Once this is approved, a gold seal will be sent. (this is a production sample). Its a really fun and exciting job and every girls dream to be buying stuff for a living!

Little Miss Buyer

Hi! I haven’t written on my blog for aaaaages! Well, it’s been about a week now. I have started my job as a buyers assistant on lighting. It’s going really well at the moment. They have plunged me in  the deep end and I have sooo much to do, I am even considering going into work early tomorrow to get some stuff done! It’s great though and I get to be really creative which i think is very exciting. I have to do a cutting and sticking job tomorrow for 6 themes that we may be buying for, and I have to interpret the themes for the department. I would definately reccommend homeware buying over fashion buying, but that could just be me!

Where are all the jobs!

Girl | Jobs, London | Saturday, 09 February 2008

What’s going on? I have been searching for a job for two weeks now and the best that the agency could come up with is a temporary job in central Acton. Yes, Acton! For a girl who lives right bang in the middle of Zone 1, travelling to Acton is not ideal.

Does anyone have a job they really love? I had been working in merchandising for the past year, then I left the company to pursue a career in buying. However, now i’m thinking what happens if I dont like buying either? I think a lot of people aren’t sure what job they want in life and your probably really lucky if you wake up each morning and are really excited about going into work.

Who would have thought it so difficult to find a job in london!
